Pre-Procedure Guidance
Having a vasectomy at Surrey Vasectomy is a straightforward procedure, but good preparation helps ensure it goes smoothly and safely. Below is all the essential information you need to know before your appointment.
✅ 1. Is a Vasectomy Right for You?
Vasectomy is a permanent method of contraception. You should only proceed if:
You are certain you do not want any more (or any) children in the future.
You’ve had time to reflect and discussed this with your partner (if applicable).
You understand that reversal is not guaranteed and vasectomy should be considered irreversible.
If you have doubts, speak to your GP or a member of our vasectomy team before booking.
📅 2. Before the Day of Surgery
You will receive confirmation via email or SMS. Let us know in advance if you need to reschedule.
If you take aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, or any other blood-thinning medications, inform the clinic at least 7 days before your procedure. We may ask you to alter some of the timings of your medications or discuss it with your GP.
Manscaping
Please trim your pubic hair on your scrotum and base of the penis 3 days before your procedure:
Use an electric trimmer or scissors.
Be careful to avoid nicks or cuts.
Around 3-6mm in length is ideal (grade 1-2).
Please try to avoid shaving as that can increase the risk of infection.
This reduces infection risk and makes the procedure easier.
Shower on the Day
Have a thorough shower on the morning of your procedure. Use soap to clean your groin area well. Do not apply any creams, powders, or deodorants afterwards. You can use antiseptic wash such as Octenisan wash solution to further prevent risk of infection.
👖 3. What to Wear and Bring
Wear tight-fitting underwear (supportive briefs or trunks, not boxers). This helps reduce swelling after the procedure.
Bring a spare clean pair of tight underwear in case needed.
Wear loose trousers or joggers for comfort.
🚗 4. Travel and Support
Do not drive yourself to the appointment. Arrange for a friend or relative to take you home. If you don't have a lift available, it is advised to arrange a taxi to take you home.
Plan a quiet evening and next day at home to rest.
🍽️ 5. Food, Drink, and Medication
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your appointment. Do not come on an empty stomach.
Take regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs for at least 24 hours before your appointment.
🧾 6. Consent and Questions
You’ll be asked to sign a consent form on the day confirming:
You understand the procedure.
You are choosing it voluntarily.
You are aware of risks and potential failure rates (about 1 in 2,000 for late failure after clearance).
We will also discuss:
What to expect during and after the procedure.
Follow-up arrangements, including post-op semen testing.
Any concerns or questions you have.
🧑⚕️ 7. On the Day of the Procedure
Arrive at the clinic 10–15 minutes early.
The doctor will review your history and go over the consent again.
You’ll be guided to a clean, private treatment room.
The procedure usually takes 10 - 15 minutes.
